OBITUARY.
SIR ALFRED EAST.

The death is announced of Sir Alfred East, president of the Royal Society of British Artists.
Sir Alfred East was born at Kettering on December Id, 1849, and received his early education at Kettering and the Government School of Art, Glasgow. >io afterwards attended schools in Paris and was a pupil of MM. T. Flurey and Beaugerau in the latter city. Ho was a member of all tho leading art societies and was a gold medallist at London, Paris and Munich. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy sinco 1882 and was elected an associate of that body in 1899, and was knighted in 1910. Examples of his work have found* a place in tho Luxembourg, Paris, National Gallery of Hungary, Permanent Gallery of the City of Venice, Milan, Brussels National Gallery, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds, Preston, Carnegie Gnllery, Pittsburg, Hull City Gallery, Oldham Municipal Gallery, Art Institute. Chicago, and tho Leicester Municipal Gallery. He published a book entitled "The Art of Landscape Painting in Oil Colours," which found much favour in art circles. Whenever asked what was his favourite recreation his usual reply was, "My work first."

AUCKLAND, September 29. Tho death is announced of Mr James Macalpine, Government Inspector of Machinery, aged thirty-seven years.
