FIRES.
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. BRISBANE, October 14. Lightning started a fire in Reid and Company's large warehouse, Roekhampton, by which it was practically gutted. The damage was very heavy, but i» sovered by insurance. [Per Phess Association.] WELLINGTON, October 14. By a firo at Otaki yesterday several buildings belonging to tJ-e Hombersley Estate were burned. Tbj fire began in Mr J. Levesey's shop, and it m surmised was caused by a pie-beater which gave trouble before this. The shop and the bakery. Bilts and Moore's storeroom, Le On's Chinese shop, and an unoccupied house were dastroyed. There is no water supply and a bucket brigade did well to restrain the limits of the fire. The insurances are only small. Mr Byron Brown lost £2OO worth of machinery in Mr Bilt's storeroom GORE, October 14. A seven-roomed house at Mataura, owned by the estate of the late Robert Hastie, the tenant being Mr W. Welham, was burned this morning. The insurances are—House, £250 "in the National office; furniture; £55 in the New Zealand office. Mr Welham is a heavy loser. • A^fir6^ at I; 30 ,?-!", to-day occurred in the New Zealand Loan Company's rtables, which were partially destroyed. The building contained 'four horse stalls, loose boxes, chaff house, etc., ■ £•?** • a raotor-bicycle was destroyed! The insurance was £175 in the Union Qffie*.
