GAMBLING.
TO THE EDITOR,
Sir, —It is to be hoped that the police of Christchurch will take a lesson from Auckland and make some little effort to stop tho gambling which is so rife in this part of Canterbury. When one. sees the amount of men, both married and single, that spend the whole of Sunday at “two up” one gets a little idea of the poverty that must exist in their homes. It is safe to say. that where there is a gambler there is poverty also. Perhaps if the police would pay a visit to Laid hurst on a Sunday they would be convinced as to the truth of my statement. They have only got to watch the crowd that leave Islington to get to their haunts. At a largo factory not twenty miles from here there are men who are just running over one another making double books on the races. I can justly say this has been going on for years.—l am. etc., ONLOOKER.
