COUNTY COUNCILS.
* - WAIREWA. A meeting of the Wairewa County Council was held on Tuesday ; present— Messrs Parkinson (chairman), Barclay, Coop, Feather., Thompson and Gobbie. Tho Akaroa County Council wrote, consenting to receive a deputation to discuss the apportionment of part of .the assets and consenting to the soverAnce of N Puaha on condition that Reserve 1259 remained part of tho Akaroa County. Mr Barclay was added to tho deputation already appointed to wait on the Akaroa County Council. Messrs Luttrell Bros, wrote, declining to go on with the erection of the Coronation Library if a clerk of works was appointed. ft was decided to inform Messrs Luttrell Bros, that they would be expected to carry out their agreement to erect the library. The Springs County Council wrote, objecting to the charges proposed for the supervision of boundary bridges. It was resolved to inform the Springs Council that the charges were tho same os those charged by tho Selwyn County Council. Regarding the purchase of a traction engine it was reported that several of all grades were under offer, and at prices ranging from £125 to £950. Tt was resolved to postpone the purchase of a traction engine for tho present, and to hire an engine to cart shingle for the roads. It was decided that a pound should be erected on tho Quarry Reserve at Kaituna. and that legal advice should bo obtained on the impounding charges. Mr Gebbie reported having attended, in company with Mr Thompson, a meeting convened by the Christchurch City Council. It was a very representative meeting, and should have good effects .as regards better railway facilities at Lytteltbn. It was reported that the lease of Sally’s Bay property lin'd been snld at £4O per annum. Accounts amounting to £ll6 11s lOd were passed for payment. pAparua. A meeting of the Paparua County Council was held on Thursday last. In the absence of the chairman, Mr Leslie was voted to the chair. Mr IV. S. Short, commissioner appointed to hold an inquiry into the future maintenance of the Rakaia Bridge, forwarded his report which stated that the annual charge of £3OO would in future be borne by the Selwyn and Ellesmere Counties in the proportion of £2OO and £IOO respectively. Complaints were received from the water-race earotakors of the practice of watermen employed by threshing .machine owners blocking the water races, and it was decided to write to tho engine-owners drawing their attention to the matter and a,'•'lcing for their co-operation in stopping tho nuisance. It was decided to recommend to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board two cases of distress for favourable consideration. It was reported that all the races in the district had been flowing satisfactorily, and there had been no floods in the river during the month. Several old bridges on tho old races near Halkett had been taken down and tho unused races filled in level with the roads. The culvert at West Melton had been replaced and the road had been made up with metal, while the culvert on the Halkett Road was at present being attended to. A contract for the work on the new road at Hornby had been let and the work started. The final adjustment had been made between the Council and the Malvern County with. reference to the assets and liabilities of the West Melton Riding and the payment by the Malvern County of £703 6s lid completed the negotiations.
