TRAMWAY BOARD.

YESTERDAY’S MEETING. The Christchurch Tramway Board met yesterday;. present—Messrs J. A. Flesher (chairman), W. Reece, D. Sykes, S. A. Staples, AY. Hill and A. AY. Beaven. Accounts amounting- to £5813 4s 10d were passed for payment. The- chairman reported that a meeting of ratepayers had been held at Papanui in connection with the proposed extension and a resolution urging the Board to take a poll had been carried unanimously. The meeting, he said, had been of an enthusiastic character.

The Works and Traffic Committee reported that it had been decided to order from the Board’s English indentors 280 tons of rails of different classes for stock purposes. The committee had appointed Mr B. Stocks to the position of permanent-wav foreman. The report was adopted. A letter was received from the Canterbury Drivers’. Uniou stating that the rails at the intersections of Manchester Street with Cashel and Worcester Streets were below the surface of tile road and dangerous > to drivers ) of vehicles. The Union asked that the danger should be removed. The Board’s engineer stated that the rails could not follow the grade of the road, and at the crown of the road the rails had to be slightly below the surface. The lines were not dangerous to vehicles driven at a moderate speed. It was decided to reply that the Board would do all in its power to accede to the request. after a consultation with the City Council. Mr J. G. Donaldson wrote protesting against the change of the name of a stopping-place on the Hackthorne lino from '• Aoraha ” to “ Gwynfa.” It was explained by the general manager that “ Gwynfa ’’ .had been adopted before the opening of the line, because it was on a gate opposite the stopcingplace, while the other name was two chains distant. A formal resolution defining the Papa - uui tramway extension special rating area was carried, and authority was given for affixing the Board’s seal to the application for an Order-in-Oouncil authorising the Fendalton and Dallington extensions.

Tho tenders of Mr J. Taylor, £162, for the erection of dressing-rooms and store at the power station, and of Messrs Large and Allen, £59, for the supply of destination boxes, were accepted. ' •
