CONDENSED CORRESPONDENCE.
“ Kerei ” writes : “ Many employers wonder at the discontent amongst tho workers, but surely the bosses need not be told that education has enabled tho toilers to see with new eyes and think with new minds. It must bo fair treatment or war. Tho old cry of the half a loaf is out of date. Compromises seldom pay doctors’ bills or buy bags of sugar.” “ M.L.” wishes to draw the attention of the police to a number of young men who loiter about the corners or Kiimore and Armagh Streets and the East Belt on week day and Sunday evenings, and whom ho describes as “an intolerable pest.” “Up-to-date” asserts that ono of tho most dangerous pieces of road within fifty miles of Christchurch is that part of Wainoni Park Road botween Kerr’s Road and Wainoni Park, it being only 20 feet wide and without a footpath. The Heathcoto County Council has been prevented from widening tho road by the existence of a drain which the Drainage Board has been petitioned to divert. So far, however, the Board has done nothing in the matter. H. L. Washer thinks that tho Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is failing in part of its duty when it allows birds and other animals to bo kept in captivity. These “pets” have to drag out a weary existence in tiny cages, entirely dependent upon their ofttimes forgetful owners for food and drink and shelter. Mr Washer makes a strong appeal for their liberty.
