POLICE SCOURING TE KUITI DISTRICT.

[Per Press Association’.] AUCKLAND, September 6. Early on Tuesday morning a party of four police arrived at Te Eiuiti and, accompanied by Constablo Matthew, left immediately for tlio backblccks in tho direction of Mokau. A further party of polico arrived yesterday afternoon by express from Auckland, and also left at once in that direction. Many rumours are current in regard to the mission of the police. The general opinion is that the search is for Powelka. It is held that it is possible that ho hit out across, tlio Manawatu country in tho, direction of Mokau, with tho hope of getting away on a timber scow or one of tho colliers engaged in the coal trade. It is stated that Powelka had been seen a few days ago crossing Mount Messenger in the direction of Mokau, and this is supposed to bo tho information that the polico are working: on. Advice from Awakino .states that the police interviewed a man who bore a great likeness to Powelka. It 10 understood he was tlio man seen crossing Mount Messenger.
