ATROCITIES AT FEZ. WOMEN AND CHILDREN SOLD INTO SLAVERY. SULTAN’S APPEAL FOR A FRENCH GARRISON. United Press Association—By Eloctrio Telegraph—Copyright. (Received June 1, 9.5 p.m.) TANGIER, June 1. On the evening of the arrival of the French column at Fez, a detachment of the garrison, under officers of tho French Mission, destroyed tho Lemba suburb of Fez, burned the houses, killed a number of the inhabitants, dispersing tho others. Eighty Lemba women and children wore sold into slavery in the Fez market, prices ranging from a dollar to forty dollars. The native papers bitterly protest that the Maghzen and Europeans previously promised the tribes immunity.
General Mouier had a further conference with Mula.i Hafid, who asks that five thousand French troops should remain to garrison Fez and a similar number at Moquinez. He declares that withdrawal would be the signal for a revolution. It was certain that neither Europeans nor tho Sultan would remain when the French leave.
Gourand’s column, with Dslbiez’s column, which went from Fez to assist Gourand, reached Fez on May 26 after heavy fighting.
