A snell of tropical heat culminated in a series of thunderstorms in the homo counties. Streets in many places were flooded. At Epsom the crowd returning from the races were in a sorry plight. Lightning killed two policemen and three other racegoers. Altogether seven deaths have been reported already, and many persons were severely injured by lightning. Two city churches were struck. The underground railway was flooded, and the system was short-circuited by water.
There was an extraordinary scene at Bostock’s Jungle at the White City. The thunder infuriated the pumas, which attacked and mauled a lady trainer. Tho pavilion was crowded, people escaping in torrential rain. There was great excitement. Tho trainer was rescued by attendants using crowbars.
