CANTERBURY RUGBY UNION. The delegates to the Canterbury \Sugby Union met last evening, Mr G. '•£. Mason presiding. On the motion of Mr F. Tracey, of ♦he Canterbury College Club, power was given to the Permit Committee to reclassify players at its discretion alter June 1 in exceptional circumstances. The mover explained that at present in the Canterbury College vacation players were promoted, but when t-lio ;vacation was ended they could not be (put back in their ordinary giades. The ! vacation extended from June 16 to 'July 17. . . .. • A further motion was carried providing that after July 1 no permits for I transfers from one grade to another should be granted. 1 Mr E. T. Harper, a delegate of the ■Christchurch Club, said that he wished to bring forward a glaring case, in ■which the Permit Committee had refused 1 to reinstate a player, Sapsford, as a junior. He had played last year as a senior, but was not deemed good enough for seniors this year, and hjs place had been filled, but as the Permit Committee had refused to classify him ■as a junior he was unable to play at !*ll. The matter was held over. A QUESTION OF TRANSFERS. MARIST BROTHERS AND SYDENHAM. The refusal of the Sydenham Club to .grant a permit to one of its players, C. Seaboum, to join the Marist Broisthers Club, was discussed at last evening’s meeting of delegates to the CanJterbury Rugby Union. A letter was ■received from the Marist Brothers Club '(asking that the transfer, which had Sheen refused by the Sydenham Club on the ground that the player was not Old Boy, should be granted. • The chairman (Mr G. H. Mason) said ♦hat the question had arisen as to what understanding there had been in ■regard to the membership of the club iwhen it was affiliated, and he would ■like to hear the delegates’ views on the Bubject. Mr W. Allardyce, a delegate of the (Sydenham Club, said that when the Marist Club had been affiliated it had been on the same basis as the Boys’ ■High School Old Boys’ Club. Tho question had been asked whether the old • clubs would be protected against the loss of members, and it had been made clear that the new club would eventually accept only Old Boys. . In reply to questions, the president said that the club, as registered, was the Marist Brothers Old Boys’ Club. At the meeting it had been expressly stated by the delegates of the club that for the first year it was hoped to take in players who were not old . .■boys, but eventually none but old boys would bo members. Mr C. W. Hervey said that Linwood had given Marists more players than 'any other club, and he did not see why .'transfers should not be granted, j Messrs E. T. Harper and D. Hoare urged that tho transfer should be ■granted. Mr "W. Wnlton. said that according ,to the? rules the committee should hold an inquiry into the matter. Eventually the chairman asked the delegates to express an opinion as to whether the Marist Club had been affiliated as Old Boys. He pointed out that a.ny motion would not alter the position of the committee, which was the final arbiter in all matters. It was 1 resolved on the voices that the membership of the Mhrist Club was not confined to Old Boys. At a subsequent meeting of the committee it was" resolved, on the motion pf Mr Allardyce, to grant the transfer of C. Seabourn from the Sydenham to the Marist Brothers’ Club.

The Pirates and Star Rugby Football Clubs in Timaru have combined, the name of tha new club being Star-Pir-ates.
