EXPRESSMEN ON STRIKE.

STRIKE DISORDERS. OTTAWA, March 3. The troops were called out at dpi ing,lnll, Nova Scotia, to suppress strike disorders. Th 0 strike lias lasted twenty month?. The strikers wrecked houses and injured the mine manager. the latter has been arrested on a chaige or inciting the riot.

TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL. A meeting of the Canterbury trades and Labour Council was held on »a.turdav, Mr G. H. Whiting, president, in the chair. The following remits to the annual conference were carried: Amendments to Factory Act: uection I 13, sub-section l (a), to be amended by i striking out 48 and inserting 44; (o) i to be amended by striking out the words “ and thrce-ciuarters ; (fi), to be amended by striking out the word “ five ” in the first line and inserting “four,”, and striking out the words “three-quarters of an” and inserting the word “one.” Section 9 (a), insert 44 instead of 45; (b) strike out the I words “ and a quarter,” nlso the words “three-quarter an” and insert the i word one.” “ That the Government bo requested to bring down and do its best to pass into law a Minimum u age Bill, such minimum to be Is 3d per hour.” “ That legislation be brought down requiring drivers ol motor-cars and any vehicle propelled and moved from placo to place by its own niotiv e power, to bo duly certificated by the Inspection of Machinery Department. Sucli drivers not to be under eighteen years of age.” Amendments to Conciliation and Arbitration Act: Section 93, addition clause 2, “ Any trade union, industrial union, industrial association or employer cited to appear before the Court of Arbitration to show cause why they should not be added as parties to any award, shall, if they have any objections to lodge against the application made to so add them, file their objections in writing at least five day 3 before the date fixed for the hearing of the application. Section 10i, clause 2, strike out the words “ for the enforcement of any industrial agreement or award or order of the Court.” Add the following to paragraph A:—“Tho management committee of an industrial union or association may, if a majority of the members vote in favour, instruct the secretary to apply in the prescribed form to the Court lor enforcement of any industrial agreement or award or order of the Court.” “ That the Act be amended so as to provide that when an award is made by the Court to apply to anv. industry such award shall bo binding upon every party engaged in that industry, whether eraplover or employee, throughout the whole ol the industrial district without individual citation of employers.” “That clause (jl of the Act be amended to provide that any claim for back wages shall date from the time the claim is made, and not from the time it reaches the Court.” “ That the Government be urged to provide a State ferry service between the North and South Islands.” “ That the Government be urged to pass legislation compelling all manufacturers to brand their goods manufactured in the dominion with the words * Made in New Zealand,’ with manufacturer’s name added.” I

A case was brought before the Council of an alleged ease of miscarriage of justice which had occurrod in the Magistrate’s Court in December, and it was resolved, “That the executive go into the case, and in the meantime the Minister of .lustice be written to asking that the case be reheard.”

The adjourned meeting of the Canterbury branch of tho Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants was held yesterday to hear tho report of Mr Jull on conference matters. There was a very large attendance of members, and the report revealed the increasing influence of the Society. A deputation from the Municipal Labour Party, consisting of Messrs Whiting, Young and Meyer, was introduced by Mr Whiting, who explained the position of the Labour Party in relation to municipal Eolitics, and a desire to seo a strong abcur Party returned at the approaching municipal election. The branch decided to support the requests of the deputation. At the conclusion of liis address Mr Minting invited questions. On being asked what the party was doing to obtain full civil and political rights for raihvaymen, Mr Whiting replied that that was one of

the most important planks of the party’s platform. Messrs Young and Moyer briefly addressed the meeting. t A*'”' 0 thanks was passed to Mr J nil for his address, and of confidence in him as executive representative for the branch in conjunction with Mr Hampton, whose services were also acknowledged.
