BOROUGH COUNCILS.
SUMNER. A fortnightly mooting- of the Suninei Borough Council was held last evening; present —The Mayor (Mr E. Denham), and Councillors T. R- ?' Brewer, E. F. Dorman, C. h. Gill, D. Lawrence, J. W. Lill and L- - T - Wood. The treasurer’s statement showed receipts since* last meeting amounting to £B2 -Ds 10d and expenditure, ' including•' - wages £B4 8s Nd, of £163 3s Id, leaving a debit balance f k ©' the x. fi q^ ll L 2 d £7lO 10s lOd. Accounts for £bdl 4s 4ct were passed for payment ’ A petition signed by a number of ratepayers, which had been forwarded to Mr G. Lauronson. M.P.. was placed before the Council. The petitioners complained that the obstruction of a dram l ad caused a nuisance, which constriuted a danger to the public health. Le„a advice had been obtained with regaid to the drain, and tins was to the eftee that the drain was not: a .public one, and that tho Council .was not liable, but that- if a, nuisance was caused, tne persons responsible could be called upon to abate it. The Mayor stated that tho borough’ foreman was preparing a report as to the cost of dealing wit-Ji tho matter, but the estimate given by an outside engineer was somewhat stagorering It was decided to inform the District, Health Officer that the ( mined had under consideration a scheme for providing a permanent outlet tor tho creek, and would servo notices on owners interested that they must clean out the portions of the ereek running through their properties. Works Committee reported that five tenders had . been received for the supply and erection of a firebell tower, and recommended that tho lowest, that of Messrs Lucas Bros., for £4O. should be accepted. The committee also recommended that a reward, of £o should be offered to anv person giving information that would" load to the conviction ot the person who damaged tlie approach to the band rotunda during the night ot December 14. The report wha adopted Tho Finance Committee recommended that steps should bo taken under the Municinal Corporations Amendment Act to appoint a special constable, with a. view 'to securing convictions against Any person found breaking on the beach, _a.iul to assist in putting down vandalism m tho borough. The report was adopted.
