STEAMER. WRECKED
AN ALASKAN DISASTER. VANCOUVER, December 12.
The steamer Olympia was forced ashore at Blight Island, Alaska. There are one hundred and sis persons aboard, who are believed to be safe. A wireless call was heard, but was soon silenced.
(Received December 14, 12.5 a.m.) OTTAWA, December 13.
The Alaskan liner Olympia left Cordova on Saturday after the hold was empty, the stern high and the propeller almost useless. A storm sprang up, a.nd the vessel was driven on a reef, s great hole being torn amidships. The passengers, numbering 126, were saved, but it is expected that the vessel will become a total loss. She resembles an iceberg, huge masses of ice sheathing the hull. The chief portion of the cargo was salvaged. The same company's steamer North-western grounded in Puget Sound recently. A woman aboard the Olympia was also in the North-western when she was wrecked.
