Forty-throe children in the Praying Children's Home, Springfield, Missouri, were about to retire for the night when a fire started. One child lost its life. The others were rescued. The structure was gutted.

[Per Press Association.] DARGAVILLE, December 13. The mystery connected with the disappearance of Lewis, the engineer, from the Dairy Company's steamer is still unsolved. Every attempt has been made to recover the body from the river into which it is believed he was precipitated, but so far without success. There seems to be no doubt that Lewis was drowned. A sad feature of the disappearance'is tha.t he was shortly to be married. DUNEDIN, December 13. A sad accident occurred near Kartigi to-day, the victim being Catherine Coughlan, aged seventeen years. Miss Coughlan, whose father is licensee of the Shamrock Hotel, was a passenger by the first express from the north, she and her cousin returning from the Oamaru convent for the Christmas holidays. The girl fell off the train, and when picked up was dead, the body being badly out.
