'The Koonya is due from Timaru. The Marama and Moana will again exchange runs -et Sydney at the end of next month. The Union Company has received a cablegram stating that the Itinda, from Calcutta, passed Brisbane on Wednesday. I' __ The Tyser steamer Indraghiri left yesterday afternoon for Dunedin, where Bne will complete the discharge of her New York cargo, she is to proceed to Australia to load lor London. The Wootton is expected to leave to-day lor Kaiapoi and Wanganui. It was hoped that the Corinthic could have been got away for 'Wellington to-day to complete loading for London. The spell of wet weather interfered a good deal with the handling of the wool destined for her, and she is therefore detained till Monday. Her departure from Wellington for London has been postponed until noon on Friday. Her cargo at Lyttelton comprises, among other ■big lines, about 5000 bales of wool. The Falls of Nith is to sail for Bluff on Monday. The Federal-Houlder-Shire liner Nairnshire is due on Tuesday from Timaru to complete loading for West of England ports. Sho should leave on Thursday for Avonmouth. After a brief stay in Lyttelton the schooner Morning Light sailed again yesterday afternoon for Nelson and Waitapu. The Shaw-Savill steamer Karamea, which Is loading at Oamaru, is to go next to Nelson, Napier and Gisborne, before she comes here to load. She will go from here to Wellington, and her final port will be Auckland, which sho will leave about the middle of next month. An application for a rehearing of the nautical inquiry into the loss of the Wellington Steamer Duco has been refused by the Minister of Marine, on tho ground that sufficient reason has not been advanced. 1 The following particulars concerning what Is known as the “ Papanui Shoal,” in the Tamar River, have been furnished to the Washington Hydrographic Office by Captain A. J. Emslie, of the steamer Loongana: “ The rocky patch recently struck by the s.s. Papanui is located four and a half miles from Waterhouse Island, the crown of the rock bearing N. 47deg. W. magnetic from the extreme north end of Waterhouse Island; minimum soundings, 10ft L.W.O.S. Various Isoundings taken on tho shoal are as follows: j.—6ooft northwards of rock, 6 fathoms; 800 ft yiorthwards, 10 fathoms; 600 ft south, 12 ■ fathoms; 700 ft eastwards. 10 fathoms; 600 ft 'westwards, 5 fathoms; 700 ft westwards, 9 ■ fathoms; 100 ft north-north-west, 15 fathoms; 1100 ft south-south-east. 7 fathoms; 700 ft southjwest, 6 fathoms.” J A striking illustration of the rapidity with (which shipping generally, even elaborately-fitted-up mail steamers, depreciates in valuo iis afforded by the recent sale of five of the Peninsular and Oriental Company’s vessels, the Victoria, Britannia, Peninsula, Malacca and Formosa. The two first-named were favourite vessels with Australians, and, after being engaged on the mail line for many years, passed last vear into the hands of the foreigner. Sir Thomas Sutherland last month told the shareholders of the company that the five steamers named originallv cost the company £660.000. and had been disposed of for the sum of £45.000. Sir Thomas added that the fleet of the company is the most costly under the British flag, the total sum Jiaid for the vessels now in commision liavng been £9,250,000.
