KAIKOURA NOTES.
[From Our Correspondent.]; , ' KAIKOURA, April 26. After a long spell of fine weathei a break came last night, and the 1 weather is now cold and has a decidedly ' \ wintry ieel. There-lias been a slight fall of snow on the ranges. ' Threshing operations are finished in this district and fairly good yields are reported, going up to 72J bushels of Danish oats to the acre. Pigs are being exported in fair num-. bare, farmers finding it more profitable, to sell at the Kaleyards than to cure and sell bacon locally. ; ' Several lines of sheep are still going forward to the saleyards, but the bulk of this trade is finished now until the spring. Work has been completed at the »ejv wharf, and is awaiting the officer who has to pass it. / >. / The County Council’s new by-law l regulating traffic in the town area came into force recently, but ,it does not eeeni to be taken very seriously. Mr U. G. Doyle has resigned his seat on tho County Council, and it ’s understood that Mr James Boyd,, an tkcouncillor, intends seeking election. The Brass Band is again going ahead, the membership now. numberiig seventeen. Several new instruments have been bought, and, judging from f the music supplied, the band can com* pare favourably with some of the older bands of the oountry. The sum of £8 8s in special prizes - has been given to tbe Collie Dog Club for the trials to be held on May 24. It has been proposed to form • Pigeon, Poultry Sand Canary Soci ityin Kaikoura, and a meeting is to held to discuss the matter. The annual Hapuku Bushmen a Sports were held on Easter Good entries were received for all events and great interest' was\ taken. The gathering provided one of the most enjoyable day’s sports held here fat some time. Tho annual ball in ..tho evening wound up a very successful during the last month or six weeks Kaikoura has had a good share of amusements. The Drill Hall has been occupied by Montgomery’s Entertainers (two uights) ; Roeewame Concert Party (two nights),. Maori Concert* (two nights), a local benefit concert and the Bushmen’s Ball. There were also the sports on Easter Monday and five or six social gatherings and brass band entertainments. - A meeting of ladies has been held and a programme drawn up for the entertainment of Sir Joseph and. Lady WaTd on the Occasion of their visit to open the new wharf. ' At the annual meeting of St Peter’s and St James’s Anglican Churches the following officers were elected:—Yicar’s warden, Mr Stuhbersfield; people's warden, Mr R. Pope; vestry, Messrs Harrison, Renner, Palmer, James Boyd, P. J. Boyd, Wright and G. Barrett | synedsman, Mr, Palmer. The Rev NA A. Friberg, 'of Westport, was recently appointed vicar. Mr Fuldseth (Christchurch) is relieving Mr Ross at the Bank of New Zealand. Mr Ross will go on a six weeks’ holiday to Australia. Mr and Mrs Freeborn Parsons intend to leave for; Great Britain soon. Mr Melville, late manager of Green Hills Estate, has gone to Dunedin, en route for Scotland. •: ' '. .
