THE NAVY.

A STATEMENT BY MR ASQUITH. LORD CHARLES BERESFORD'S REPORT. THE TWO-POWER STANDARD. United Pror.3 Association—By Eleotrio Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, April 23. Mr Asquith informed the House of Commons that the statement regarding the readiness of the fleet in Home waters recently presented to him by Lord Charles Beresford, was about to be considered by the Committee of Imperial Defence. The majority of the newspapers welcome the announcement of an inquiry. Mr Asquith informed Mr J. S. Lonsdale that Mr Churchill's letter was not written after consultation with his colleagues. The Government had not abandoned the view that a two-Power standard was workable. The statement was received with Opposition cheers. Mr Asquith added, amid Opposition laughter, that Mr Churchill's statement must be read in connection with the contest.
