WEST COAST NOTES.

[From Ocr Correspondent.] GREYMOUTH, April 21. Air H. G. Eli, M.P., is so eager to 6es a. market opened in Christchurch and elsewhere for the kawaka, or New Zealand cedar, that lie yesterday morning obtained, a specimen of it from Mr C. Uddstrom. This was about three feet long, and consisted of two pieces of 3in by lin moulded together and polished on one side. It is a most beautiful specimen, and Mr Ell s intention is to induce some cabinetmaking and furniture warehouses to order a consignment-, and so utilise one of the best New Zealand timbers, which is now allowed to rot and decay in the bush. Mr Daniels, head of the Union Steam Ship Company’s repair staff, is at present on a visit to Greymouth making arrangements to have the boiler used in connection with the Hawea removed to Westport. On Sunday eight skilled men arrived at Westport to resume operations for re-launching the s.s. Taviuni, stranded on the south beach.
