CRICKET.

'CANTERBURY v. SOUTH OANTER- . BURY. ; MATCH AT TIMARU. [Per Press Assoclvtion.] TIMARU, February 10. The Canterbury representative cricketers broke their’ journey south to play a match at Timaru against the South Canterbury eleven. The latter was not so strong as had been expected, Howclen (Geraldine) and Young (Timaru) being unable to play. The weather was variable, a strong southerly blowing, and later light rain and an overcast sky troubled the players. Anthony, winning tho toss, elected to bat on a tvicket that was excellent at the south end, but bumpy at the north end. The visitors kept the local representatives Very busy from twenty minutes to two till ten minutes to six o’clock, working up the large total of 345 runs. Towards this Humphreys’s contribution was the most handsome. He was badly missed l>y Cavo in the long-field when he had scored only 10 and again at 50, and just an lie had reached his century. At last Lynch took a beautiful catch over the bowler’s head, and the Englishman retired amid great applause. Anthony had. bad luck. Ho got under a bumpy one from O’Callaghan, putting it high to square leg, end the wicket-keeper, running out, held it. Neild and Haves batted very confidently, but tho best display of the day was undoubtedly made by Humph revs. At times ho was wonderfully clever in cutting and driving. Ho lifted one ball to tho pavilion and put another over the northern fence. It was on the whole a display of great confidence. All the biggest run-getters were particularly Gevef9 on the leg side. Tho fielding of the local players was very keen, but their bowling, excepting that of O’Callaghan, was not particularly good. The scores aro as fellow CANTERBURY. First Innings.
