THE OTIRA TUNNEL.

[Froji Our Correspondent.] GREYMOUTH, May 11. With regard to the recent trouble at the Otira tunnel works it is understood that the men approacliod Messrs M’Lean Bros with a request that they should grant 11s per day to employees in wet places in the tunnel. This was refused, and the men left tho employment. It is explained that the ruling rate in coal mines on tho West Coast for wet places is 12s for six hours and 16s for eight hours, therefore it is contended that the men at Otira offered to work at a lower rate than tho standard wage for such work*
