A Chinese ooal-trimmer on hoard the steamer African Monarch, which arrived from Sydney to-day, committed suicide on the passage by hanging himself in one of the coal hunkers.
To-day a serious accident befell an employee of the Telegraph Department named Roland Malcolm. He was fixing a wire on a temporary pole at the railway wharf, and when at the top of the polo it suddenly gave way, precipitating Malcolm heavily to the wharf. Dr Aubin was hastily summoned, and discovered that Malcolm’s right arm was broken just below the elbow, while other severe inquiries were sustained. At the inquest to-day regarding the death of William Amos, a Wellington resident who died suddenly in Queen Street yesterday, evidence was given, that deceased had endeavoured to obtain accommodation at various hotels in Onehunga and the city, hut was refused in every case on account of his emaciated appearance. Tho jury in returning a verdict of death from natural causes added a rider that the authorities should ho requested to take action against those hotel keepers who had refused, for insufficient reasons, to accommodate deceased. WANGANUI, May 11. The body of Matthew Connor, a well known settlor, who was drowned in the river seventeen' miles above Wanganui on October 16, 1907, was found floating opposite Castlecliff yesterday. At an inquest to-day a verdict of death by accidental drowning was returned. NAPIER, May 11.
Michael Kirby, of Hastings, married, and aged thirty-eight, died in the hospital while under chloroform. In a fall over his doorstep on. Saturday, ho fractured both bones of the left leg, and was brought into Napier for treatment. Drs W. Moore and Brett administered chloroform, and while under tho influence of tho anaesthetic tho patient collapsed, and despite tho efforts of the doctors failed to rally.
While cycling along the Alford Forest ltoad, Ashburton, on Sunday evening, Mr J. Jones, of Ashburton, mot with an accident through his bicyclo collapsing and throwing him heavily to the ground. He sustained a dislocated shoulder and cuts and bruises on his face and body.
