Tile Rev P. R. Paris arrived from the north by tlie Ta rawer a yesterday morning. Th© Hon C. Louisson, M.L.C., arrived from Wellington by the Mararoa yesterday. A Press Association message states that a cablegram received in Wellington announces that Sir James Mills, managing director of the Union Steamship Company, whoso knighthood was recently announced, received the honour at the hands of the King on Monday afternoon. Messrs Quiree (Wellington), W. A&pinall, P. Carroll (Dunedin), and L. Maxwell (West Coast) are in Christchurch. Mrs Garrick, widow of the late Mr F. J. Garrick, head of the late lirm of Garrick, Oowlishaw and Fisher, died at her residence, Papanui Road, yesterday. She was. seventy-five years of age. The Bishop of Waiapu has appointed the Rev Herbert W. Williams to be Archdeacon of Waiapu and the Rev David Ruddock Archdeacon of Hawke’s Bay. Mr James Butt, one of the pioneer settlers of Cheviot, has disposed of his farm and is about to start on a visit to England. On Tuesday evening a number of friends mot him at Miss Winterbourne's tea-rooms to bid him “ bon voyage.” Mr Butt was presented with a framed picture of Mackenzie, as a memento of his long residence in Cheviot. At a social held in Mrs Moffit’s boardinghouse on Wednesday evening, Mrs Butt was presented with a travelling nig. Miss Butt with a gold chain and pendant, and Mr Butt, jun., with a case of brushes. After supper a pleasant evening was spent, songs being sung, _ and all present united in heartily wishing Mr and Mrs Butt a pleasant trip and full enjoyment of their well-earned vest. Sir George Clifford, Dr Makgill, and Mr H. Quano left for Wellington by the Mararoa yesterday ‘evening. Mr Thomas Bullock (Ashburton) was in Christchurch yesterday.
