Sir D. Jones, president' of the North Canterbury executive of the Union, informed a reporter that, it was gratifying to find that the Government had" at lest granted what the Union had all along contended for, the; abolition of the sheep tax. It had been ; imposed to provide funtfs for the eradication of scab, which had long ceased to exist. The farmers would appreciate the action of the Government in abol- , isbing what was purely a class tax, andin proving that it desired to deal fairly with one of the colony’s chief industries.
