THURSDAY MATCHES. Instead of the .usual senior hockey matches yesterday, the Thursday selector, Mr T. Smith, arranged a game between a mixed eleven and the Sydenham Seniors as a tidal game. The weather was fine, and the ground in excellent order. The Junior and Presidents’ Cup competitions were advanced another stage, and a large number of spectators witnessed the various games. TRIAL MATCH. The teams for the trial match were as follow:—Sydenham (blue and black) —Bull, Barritt, P. Campbell, Throp, R. Campbell, • Howison, Manks, Gray, Harrington, Hulbert and White. Mixed team (colours) —Mackay, Robertson, Hall, Wendelburne, Cowdery, Year, Peglor, Hulston, Luxton, Featherstono, and- Green. Green and Featherstone worked the ball to the Blue’s circle, where the former shot wide. White and Hulbert returned and G. Robertson and Hall cleverly stopped a Sydenham attack. The Colours attacked temporarily, and then the Sydenham forwards finished up another strong run by Harrington scoring. Returning, Gray had a chance but shot wide. Cowdery stopped a Sydenham rush and removed play to the centre. The Colours attacked and Featherstone shot a goal, but was called hack for off-side play by Hulston. The Blues again attacked, and their opponents conceded a. corner, from which Cowdery found the line near the centre. White returned with a fine run, only to see Robertson hit over, giving a corner. Sydenham’s next rush was well stopped by Hall, but returning to the attack Gray scored. The Colours attacked, and .Hall drove to Sydenham’s circle, but offside play by their opponents gave the j Blues relief and a fine run ended in, Gray again scoring. Harrington was penalised for off-side play, and the freehit enabled the Colours to attack. Hulston shot a goal, but was ruled off-side. After Manks had had a shot, which went wide, the Sydenham forwards came through again and Harrington shot successfully. In the second spell the Blue forwards quickly became aggressive and Manks scored. The Sydenham attack was most consistent, and after White had mad© an unsuccessful attempt Hulbert sent a good shot past Mackay. Hulbert ran the length of the ground and centred, but Mackay spoilt Gray’s shot. The Colours attacked, but Luxton hit over and Green repeated the performance. From a scramble in front of the Colours’ goal the ball came out to R. Campbell, who scored the best goal of the game. Sydenham were playing with splendid combination, and the mixed team could not withstand the clever passing rushes pf the Blue forwards, Hulbert scoring from another rush. Towards the end of the game a penalty bully' against Thi’op for lying on the ball in his circle gave Luxton a chance. The ball, however, hit the post and bounced back, enabling Throp to hit out.
