CHARITABLE AID.

The North Canterbury and Ashbuxtou United Charitable Aid Board met on Wednesday; present—Mr B. P. Manhire (chairman), Mrs Dunkley, Major Paul, and Messrs C. J. Harper, H. Friedlander, F. Horrell, J. Wolfe, W. Dunlop, W. Radcliffe, J. H. Davison, G. Bedford, G. W. -T. Parsons and H. J. Horrell. The chairman reported that Dr Valintino, Inspector-General, had recently met members of the Board, and had spent, an afternoon in watching the Charitable Aid Committee's methods ot dealing with applications for relief. Dr Valintino also introduced a deputation from tho Board to the Hon G. Fowlds. A letter was received from tho New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club asking whether the Board would sell a portion of the Twigger Estate at Addington leased to the club. The Board went into committee to consider the letter, and on resuming the chairman reported that the question had been referred to the Finance Committee for a report. The chairman reported tho result of the conference with members of the Hospital Board, and the deputation to the Minister of Public Health regarding the treatment of incurables. Tho conference was of opinion that tho Charitable Aid Board should house destitute persons who were not fit subjects for hospital treatment. The committee appointed for the conference was of opinion that it was not necessary to set up a large new institution, seeing that room could bo found for women in the rWoolston home, and man in the Ashburton home. It was hoped that Parliament would at once amend the existing Act to provide facilities for raising funds to safeguard the Board against an influx of chronic cases. The action of the committee was approved. The Finance Committee reported that it had placed a new proposal before the Christchurch _ Tramway Board for the improvement of tho tramway into the, trotting ground at Addington. Instead of a balloon, loop-line., the committee proposed malting & new road through the) Twigger Estate, so that the trams should run round a block which, could be cut up for building purposes. The report was received, 'and the committee was empowered to make all necessary arrangements. The treasurer reported that the receipts from May 18-to June 30 had been £455 15s 7d from local bodies, £192 12s lid from old age pensions, and £33 Is 5d from other sources, making a total of £6Bl 9s lid.
