■VICTORIAN BOBBLE CHAMPIONSHIP. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, September 14. The double golf championship of Victoria resulted in Riddell and Brookes (holders) retaining the championship. The golf ob -mpionship of Victoria was won by Riddell. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP. A WIN FOR GOLLAN. There . waa a large attendance ■ at the Shirley gotf links yesterday morning to witness tiro final of. the -New Zealand Amateur Championship between S. li. Goilan (Napier) and W. T. D. Harman (Christchurch). Thirtysix holes had, to be played to decide the ■event, and the -first eighteen holes were concluded by noon, after a punctual commencement at ten o’clock. The result was rather disappointing to admirers of the local candidate, for although he ■ was not expected to win the match outright, he was quite capable,- on form, of giving a good exhibition of golf. His driving and approaching were good, hut his putting was indifferent, and he had consistent ill-fortune, lipping tho hole more than once. Tho greens had not been cut, and this led to a considerable extent to Harman’s failure to make a better showing than ho did. There waa not a great deal of difference between the play, and if. Harman had putted better the first half of the match would have been more interesting. He outdrove Goilan every time, but the ex-champion’s excellent putting ’was not relaxed, and he also approached well, while Harman repeatedly approached and putted too strongly, over-running the hole. The first round left Golla-n -six up, but on continuing after luncheon the end came at tho eleventh, whore he was eight-up and seven to play. Seventeen of the twenty-nine were halved, and Goilan won ten to his opponent’s two. Harman, however, made a good showing, all things being considered, and earned honour for the Christchurch Club by his creditable position as runner-up, for which ho was congratulated on all sides. Details of-tho play -are as follow: NEW ZEALAND AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. S. H. Goilan (Napier) v. W. T. D. Harman (Christchurch), six up on the first eighteen boles. Tho holes were as follows, Harman’s being given first:—o—s, C—6, 4—4, 4—3. 4—4, 5—5, 5—5, 5—4, 5—5, 4—3, 5—5, 5—5, 7—6 4—4, 5—4, 4—4, B—s, o—4. Harman 66, Goilan 81. At tho first hole- both players got away with good drives and seconds. Gollan’s third was short of the green, and Harman was too strong. Goilan effected a splendid approach putt, but Harman overran tho hole, and, missing his putt, Goilan won in 5—6. Good drives followed at the second, but Harman ran into the water. Gollan’s next two approaches were short, and Harman overran the green, an.di was too strong in his next putt. Goilan putted badly, and the hole was halved, in six. Goilan 1 up. At the third both got splendid drives away, but Goilan nulled his second to tho left, Harman getting a beautiful ■ shot on to the green. Goilan then made a splendid approach, and put hie ball dead, and the hole was halved in four. At the fourth Goilan made another splendid approach, and Harman overran the green. Goilan made a splendid crisp putt, and won the hole, after magnificent play, in 3—l, and was two up. At the fifth Goilan drove short, and Harman well to tho left. Both approached cleverly, and tho hole was halved in four. At the sixth both were on tho green in two, Harman having slightly tho better position. Goilan putted too strongly, and Harman laid his dead, but missed an easy putt, and halved in five. Both drove well to tho seventh, but tho seconds were short of the green. Approaching well, Harman, with his fourth, just Upped the hole, and it was halved in five. Goilan was just on tho eighth green with hia mashie shot, and Harman was a bit too strong, and short' in his approach. Goilan putted out in three to four, and was threo up. Both drove well to the ninth, and were just to the right with their approach shots. _ Goilan missed a putt in a fairly difficult position, and the hole was halved in five. Goilan won the tenth in B—l, and at the eleventh both drove well, but were short with their iron shots. The next approaches were good, but Gollan’s was rather lucky. Harman putted short with hia next, and, Goilan being content with lying dead, the hole was halved in five. At the twelfth both again got away good drives, Goilan getting a good cleek shot with his second. Harman got into rushes, but made a splendid recovery, and got on the edge of the green with his third, Goilan doing likewise. Both made splendid putts to within a few inches of the hole, and it waa halved in five, after splendid play, being one of the beat holes of the round. Both drove towards Land’s End within a yard of each other. Harman overran the green . with hia third, and- ran down again with his next. Goll&n played hia third short, but was up with his fourth, and won in G—7. At tho fourteenth Goilan got to the loft with his cleek shot, and Harman got nicely on the green. Goilan was nicely on the green with his second and Harman putted slightly strong and missed tho putt, tho hole being halved in four. At the fifteenth Gol-lan drove safely to the left, and Harman just ole.ared tho hunker. Goilan made a splendid approach. Harman slightly overran the green, playing too much uphill. Goilan lay Harman a stymie and won in 4—4. At the sixteenth Goilan got on the green with his cleek shot, Harman’s being carried by the wind into the bunker. He, however, made a splendid recovery just past the flag, and then gave Goilan a stymie with his next, and the hole waa halved in four. At tho seventeenth Gollan played safely to the left, and Hannan put his dead. Goilan failed to got up with his second, and his third went to the right of the hole. Harman holing out in three and scoring his first win, leaving Goilan five up. At the eighteenth both got away with good oleek shots, and Goilan was on the green with his second. Harman foozled his second into the creek, and the hole was won by Goilan by 4—R, leaving him six up. On setting out for the second round, both drove well, but Harman missed his second, and his third was short, Goilan being nicely on the green in three. Harman, with his fourth, holed with a good long putt, and the hole was halved in four. Goilan shaped the better for the next hole, hut putted weakly, and it was halved in four. Harmon topped his next drive, but lay handy to the left with his third. His fourfh, however, was short, while Goilan. although short with his third, lay dead with his approach, and won in 6-6, being seven up. He waa eight up at tho next hole, putting, dead, and winning in 3-4. He sliced his next drive, and fell short of the bunker. Harmon overdrove the hole, but it was prettily halved in four. Goilan was on the sixth green with hia second. Harman was short, but approached better, and with a refreshing putt, halved in four. The next was notable for poor efforts by both players. Harman drove the better, but bungled his second short of the creek. He struck the willows with his third, but got through, Goilan meanwhile lying well with his second. Harman was on- tho green in five, but Goilan putted badly, and halved in seven. Both made good drives for the eighth, but Harman had the worse position near the gorse, and beine short with his second and third, gave up the ho'e to Goilan, who lay dead with his second, in three. Golan nine up and ten to play. After' good drives by both for the ninth.’Goilan nulled his second and lay to the right, but Harm.m putted weakly, and Goilan approaching well, was able to ha’ve. At'the tenth Goilan was just off the green, sr.d Harman slisrMly short to the rirtif. Gefian was unusually weak with his second and third, and Herman cut in 3-4, leaving Gol’an dormy ci-dit. The next was helved indifferently in five, and the New 1 Zealand Championship of 1936 closed with Goilan eight up and seven to play. BOGET HANDICAP. H. P. Wynne and C. R.
