SOUTHLAND FARMERS UNION.

[Per Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, May 25. The provincial council of the Farmers’ Union met to-day. Resolutiona were passed to strongly oppose a rerfjsion of the tariff that will increase the coat to producers of supplies most required, especially while outside borrowing is going on; supporting a graduated scale of subsidies by the Government to local bodies in lieu of grants; protesting against the action of city Magistrates in sending undesirables into the country; that the executive levy lie reduced from 10s to ss; urging members to transfer insurances to the Mutual Association.; that the. Conference strongly protests against the action of Mr Tregear, Secretary of Labour, giving such views as he has recently done through the public Frees of being a leader in Socialism and opposed to employers of labour, and therefore it is not in the interest of the community that he should continue in office, as ho cannot administer the labour laws in fairness as between employers and workers; that, while the Union is not political in a party sense, every political question should be discussed at branch and other meetings; that tho Noxious Weeds Act be mere stringently enforced, and that the Department pay more attention to the destruction of weeds on Crown lands; strongly protesting against an increase in duty on farm implements; that it is desirable that the Government should offer greater assistance to immigrant agricultural labourers; that the Railway • Department bo urged to take steps to secure more accurate weighing of grain on trucks; that a Parliamentary Commiittee be set up to watch the progress of tariff revision in the interests of farmers. The president, Mr M’Queen, was re-elected.
