RIFLE SHOOTING.
THE GOVERNMENT MEDAL COMPETITIUX. Tho marksmen o[ Forth Canterbury who qualified in the clasa-finng course of the shooting season recently closed, competed for the Government medals at the Eedoliifs rifle range on Saturday afternoon. Each competitor had an opportunity to win ono ct medal-, namely, tlie first, a goiu decoration, for tlio highest scorer in the bouth Island in the simultaneous contest held on Saturday; the second, a silver medal, for the" second highest scorer in the South Island, and the third, a silver medal, for the highest scorer in each military district who dees not win one of the South Island medals. The arrangements at HcdeiiSa were under the control of Captain M’Goe, of the District Staff, and those who assisted him were Captains Meddings, Bishop, Salter and King’ and Lieutenant Salter. Sergeants-Majov Farthing, Hoare and Canning wore in charge of the target and telephone arrangements. The conditions of the competition were seven shots at 200, 500 and 700yds, military disappearing targets at 200 and 500yds, and a second-class target at tho long lange. Colour-Sergeants Sandford (City Guards) and Colour-Sergeant Jack (Linwocd Eifles) tied with 51 out of a possible 56, i'he leading scorers wero as follow: 200 500 700
