Otago ■was resumed to-day, on the Carisbroos Ground, the weather being dull and threatening. Rain overnight had improved the wicket, which played easy. Auckland, in being set 303 in the second innings to secure a win, was asked to do a big thing, but the visitors were very hopeful that they could ceed. They were doomed to-disap-pointment, and suffered defeat by 149 runs.- Play was. resumed at 11.20, Lusk and Hemus, the not outs of the previous night, taking their places at the wickets, a substitute fielding for Biedeberg. Both played quiet cricket, end appeared to have got their eye in, ivhen Lusk, after driving Downes for four, was run out, Baker returning the ball smartly. 34—1—13. Jones came next, and, having got a risky single, was yorked by Torrance. 35—2—1. !t looked as if a rot had set in, for Elliott, who filled the vacancy, went with the • next ball. 35—3—0. Hadden came next, and a profitable partnership was set up. Hadden drove Downes for three, and a single to each paw 50 up. Hadden, after some quiet play, smote Downes for five and three, end 60, and then 70, were scon hoisted. Hadden pulled Torrance for four, and sent him to leg for three. At 84 Austin relieved Dowhes, and Hemus sent the fourth Ball from the new bowler Vway for four. Graham, with slows, relieved Torrance,. and Hemus cut him Jor a quartette. At 94 .Hadden was missed by Downes, and the century went up after an hour and ten minutes’ play, Hemus was caught a few minutes later in the slips. 103—4—43. The partnership had put on 68 runs. Hemus had played fine cricket. His ■core included four fours. Again there was a collapse. Hay stepped out to a short-pitched ball from Graham, made a. feeble stroke, and was stumped. Cliff joined Hadden, who snicked Austin to leg for four. The newcomer got % couple!, through the slips, and then Hadden lifted Graham for five. Oliff followed suit 'with four, and Austin gave to Downes. Oliff then got >ut in the same way as in the first iniinge, a weak strike to leg. 126 —6 —9. Brooke-Smith joined Hadden, and each batsman got Downes away to the boundary, the total being 136 at the luncheon adjournment. On resuming, Hadden, who had never been at home to Graham’s slows, was caught at midoff. The retiring batsman, had played very solidly for his 64, but was badly missed at 86. 139 —7—64. The end was now in eight. Stemson was caught by Williams, who had to run for the ball, off Graham. 139—8—-0. Hussey joined Brooke-Smith, who hit Graham for four. Hussey then played Downes on to his wicket. 143—9—0. Sohmoll, the-last man,, broke his duck with a single, and Brooke-Smith hit Graham for four, bringing 150 up. Downes' then bowled Schmoll with the score at 153, Otago thus winning by 149 runs. The fielding of both teams had been good throughout. The weakness of the visitors is in bowling. Scores:— OTAGO. [From Our Correspondent.] DUNEDIN, January 3. In congratulating Otago on its double »in at. cricket Over Canterbury and Auckland the “Star” says:—“The achievement should have the effect of reviving local interest in the game, which has suffered te some extent in consequence of the fiascos of last year. The victory over Canterbury !s in some respects the more valuable, at least from a traditional point of view, hut we are inclined to think that the larger measure of credit attaches to the winning of the Auckland match. The triumph at Christchurch was mainly ♦he work of a very few players, the tail being unusually conspicuous, whereas at Carisbroek the number cf virtual non-contributors was much smaller.’’ It suggests that some material acknowledgment should be made of Downes’s prolonged services to the province. CANTERBURY v. AUCKLAND. The Auckland team will arrive in Christchurch by the first express this evening, and will put up at the Criterion Hotel during their stay here. The team chosen to do battle for Canterbury is the same that has just returned from "Wellington, where, after a fine uphill game, they snatched a victory by 35 runs. The CanterburyAuokland match will be played at Lancaster .Park on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. 1 CANTERBURY v. ASHLEY COUNTY On New Year’s Day an Association match was played between a Canterbury eleven and Ashley County at Hagley Park. The former won by 23 runs. Following were the scores:— Canterbury 189 (J.
