BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEW BRIGHTON. A special meeting of th© New BrighI ton Borough Council was held on Frit day; present—Councillors Glanville (in [ “til© chair)s Otley, Lightbody, 'Mason, [ Israelson, Bellamy, Hawker, and Caygill. The special business for which I the meeting had been called was to receive the balance-sheet, as certified te by the Auditor-General. Qn the motion of Councillor Lightbody, seconded by Councillor Oaygdl, the balancesheet was received and adopted. The ordinary meeting of the Council was then held. In reply to’ a letter from the secretary of th© Drainage Board it was decided, to forward a cheque for £IOO in part payment of the rates due to the Drainage Board. The town clerk’s report stated that the balance, of the rubble for George I Street had been received, • spread - and | broken, and the re-grading of the ■ street was being proceeded with. The [ Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the fortnight had amounted te £-67 15s Id, the debtor balance of | the district general account stood at £262 18s Bd, and the expenditure on the general account had been £49 5s 6d. The committee recommended that £5 6s should be granted te the Christchurch Technical Classes. Th© report was adopted. - The Works Committee reported that a letter had been received, from Mr' G. J. Marshall stating that the re-grading operations carried on by the Council near Iris property had involved him, in considerable expense, and asking that the Council should share of the cost. A letter from Mr Marshall bearing on the matter was read, and after some discussion it was resolved that the question should be deferred until the next meeting of the Council. Mr Corson, a member of the Heathoote Road Board waited on the Council in reference’ to the proposed road from Breeze’s Road to Bexley. He stated that he had, with the Ooun--I‘oil’s delegates, waited on the Tramway ! Board, to ask that that body should ! assist the Heathoote Road Board in th© i matter ; but had received no ©noouragej ment from the Tramway Board. , On i the motion of Councillor Otley, seebnd- ! ed by Councillor Israelson, it was resolved that the Council could not see its way to contribute towards the cost i of the Road.
