AUCKLAND NEWS.

[Pjsr Press Association.^ AUCKLAND, October 26. John Churton, bookmaker, appeared in the Police Court this morning in answer to 4 a charge that on or about October 4, he, being the occupier of a certain office in Vulcan Lane, did unlawfully use it for the purpose of betting and as a common gaming-house, that he used the office for the receipt of money made on horse races, arid that he unlawfully made a bet there with John Duggan, upon the result of the Welter Handicap, run at Hastings, Hawke's Bay, whereby Churton agreed to pay to Duggan, if the latter should win such bet, a sum of money dependent in amount upon the result of the working of the totalisator. ChiefDetective Marsack asked for a remand, which was granted. The petition of Mrs Elizabeth Yates against the election of Mr Warren Blyth as a member of the Onehunga Borough Council, was considered by. Mr R. W. Dyer, S.M., at Onehunga, to-day. Petitioner recently contested a by-election against Blyth, who was elected by a majority of seventy-eight. The Courthouse was crowded. Mr Blomfield, for petitioner, specifically stated his objections to Blyth's election as follows:—(1) That the respondent was not an elector within the meaning of the Municipal Corporations Act; (2) that his nam© was not, on the district electors roll; (3) and that his name was wrongly placed by the Council or clerk upon an alleged supplementary roll within fourteen days from the day of election. Respondent's reply was that he was not responsible for any of the alleged irregularities, and, in any case, such irregularities were not sufficient to void the election. Reserving a point as to whether he could admit Mr Blomfield'e specific charges, his Worship heard evidence and argument, and stated that he would give his decision in Auckland as scon as possible.
