Captain D. Watson, secretary of the Merchant Service Guild, returned by the s.s. Warrimoo on Wednesday from a visit to Sydney. Captain Bone and Mr A. L. Herdman, M.H.R., arrived from Wellington by the s.s. Mararoa yesterday morning. Captain W. Manning, the well-known commander of the Union steamers in the "ferry" service between Lyttelton and Wellington, who has 'been on a holiday .trip to Australia, returned from Sydney to Wellington by the s.s. Warrimoo on Wednesday. ' Captain M'Donald, harbourmaster at the Bluff, returned from Australia by the s.s. Warrimoo. MtR. M. Ploueton, M.H.R., who was reconitly reported as suffering from collapse, is improving in health. Mr R. W. Richards, of Sydney, the> newly-appointed Town Clerk of Dunedin, is an Alderman of the Sydney City Counoil, and was for fifteen years; employed by that corporation in its Survey Department. On behalf of the Sydney Council, he was despatched to England to make inquiries and report upon abattoirs, gas, electricity and other municipal trading concerns. He is stated to be in the prime of life, and very energetic, and he has written a number of able reports on various municipal undertakings. The selection was finaMy restricted to him and-Mr G. A. Lowin, of Lyttelton, and Mr Richards won the ballot by nine votes to seven. The salary is £6OO a year. Mr D. Rutherford (Leslie Hills) arrived in Christchurch last evening. Among the arrivals by the express trains from the south yesterday were Messrs A. P. Campbell (Dune-din), F. Oakden (Dunodin), J. Snodgrass (Ashburton) and W. C. Chat-field (Dunedin). Messrs F. Russell and T. E. Upton (Ashburton), E. Schaet'er and F. Ponty (Wellington) and A. Atkins (Wanganui) arrived in town yesterday. The Hon H. Gourley, Mr E. G. Allen, M.H.R., left for Wellington by the s.s. Mararoa yesterday evening. Colonel Hoskins, of the__ Salvation Army (Commissioner M'Kie's chief secretary for Australasia) will arrive in Christchurch t-c-day. The Colonel' was in charge of Salvation Army operations throughout New Zealand six years ago, and is being heartily received at. each • place visited on this tour, which is be-
