Sst. RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES. Thursday. • Steady rain was falling at five o'clock, and continued throughout the morning. This, however, did not prevent most of the trainers making their appearance with their first teams. Tho only tracks that were open were the plough and the tan, the former being totally \mfit for even steady pacing. The tan provided fair .going, considering the amount of ■ rain that had fallen, hut it was too heavy for really fast work; consequently the trainers contented themselves by giving their charges useful pacing, but there was a strong feeling that the grass track might reasonably have been opened. Quarryman "and . Signalman were associated over a circuit, the last milo of which they traversed in Imm 59sec. Paritutu (Gray) and Douche (Whittaker), -together, put in two circuits at three-quarter speed, the last mile being run in lrain sSseo. Tho pair, who were going_' strongly and well throughout, were anxiouß to improve th« pace. Stepdancer (F. Jones) cantered once round,, and, then.broke away at the mile-post, which distance she traversed comfortably v in. lmin 52Jsec. Golden Knight and Calibre, with light weights up, put in half and t)i aequarter pacing over two circuits, going freely and well. Calibre, however, was lame, on leaving. the course, having bruised his foot. : Narcissus and Huku ran the last seven.furlongs of two medium pace rpunds in lmin 27Ssec, while Pas Seul and Black Diamond finished together at the end of a mile, run ' in lmin 53Jaec. There was little to choose between The Mohican (V. Cotton) and Scottish Minstrel (J. Scoullar) in a gallop over one mile, which occupied lmin 56 4-ssec. St Joe negotiated two circuits at a sound half-speed, anS Ivanofr 1 ran half a milo si three-quarter speed. Tupara cantered onoe Tound, and being then joined by Bagpipes, the pair ran a milo strongly. The following horses accomplished bjilf to medium pacing:—Golden i Vein, To-morrow, Kirriemuir, Glenowlet, Lady "Wayward, Tirole, Eticlid, Chryseis, Stronghold, Czarewna,. Mak'aroff, Culmination, Lady ' Lyo nors > Catherine /Gordon, Knastikoff, ' Handsome Rose, Ability . and Solution. The < last-named walked off the course lame, but it is said to be nothing more than a complaint of the kidneys, common with some horses, and she should be all right again in the course of a day or so. ' . S. "Waddel, who arrived yesterday with Mr , Ormond's team, had his charges out doing steady pacing. They are Lyrist, Sir Tristram, Medallist, Perdita, Zimmerman and Golden 1 Melodeon and Starshoot were also out. The 1 former,' who is carrying moro condition than , b'e did last year, is nevertheless in fine buckle, while Starshoot also looks They were restricted to half and steady pacing. After breakfast the weather was consider--1 ably worse, the rain having become heavier, and accompanied by a southerly wind, conse- ' I quently few of the trainers ventured out with ' ! their charges. Amongst those who were out, L ' I the following horses were responsible for use- > i ful to light tasks:— Ingleneuk. Tsitsihar, Stepaside, Royal Crown, Lee- Side, Hilarity, I Stars and Stripes, Drift, Veneer, Cant:c.e, ■ Graduated Tax, Alexis, Magnificent, Quickfire, ' ; Mythical, Resound, Astranderite, Somaroff, 5 Blu'estone, Ordnance and Speculate. ■ Mystification and Mungista, who arri v ed yesterday, were out, and accomplished 1 tasks.
