Special interest centred in the match between the New Zealanders and Devonport Albion. This club holds a high, if not the highest, place amongst England's crack club combinations, and it may be noted that ten of its members ; played for Devon in the initial niatchJ of the . New Zealanders' tour. Tht* English ciutics pretty unanimously predicted that whatever was the outcome of their earlier engagements the New Zealanders would be put to the test, if they did not find their Waterloo, when they met Devonport Albion. The result, however, \ falsified these predictions, the v visitors, after a well-con-tested ,game, proving victors by twentyone points to tihree. The weather conditions were perfect, and the attendance was a record one, 20,000 spectators witnessing the match. The New Zealanders were handicapped to some extent by N the absence of Wallaos, who was not included in today's team. The visitors attacked from the kick-off, and at an early stage in the game Thomson (Wanganui) crossed the line and secured a try, which" Gillett converted. This was th 0 only score made during the first half. The Devonport Albion forwards, showing brilliant form, kept the New,Zealanders fully extended for the rest of the spell, which ended—New Zealand five points, Albion nil. The visitors appeared to more advantage in the second half and kept the home team on the defensive, pressingjthem for the greater part of the time. Tries were secured by Thomson, Mynott (Taranaki), Tyler (Auckland), and Gallagher (Auckland). Gillett in two instances succeeded in sending the ball over the bar. In the last few minutes the Devonport Albion invaded the New Zealand territory, and pressing their opponents were awarded a free kick for a breach of the rules, from which they placed a goal. Shortly after no side sounded, with the score, New Zealand twentyone points, Devonport Albion three points. THE GOVERNMENT'S MESSAGE. , WELLINGTON, October 26.
