THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.

A meeting of Mr B. Baynes's supporters and friends was held at the Maori Hall, New Brighton, on AVednesday. The weather was not favourable, and the. attendance .was small. Mr Baynes delivered an address, touching upon the various subjects that will probably come prominently before the new Parliament. At the conclusion of his address Mr Thompson proposed, and Mr Williams seconded, a vote of thanks and confidenco in the candidate, which was carried unanimously. Owing to the inclemency of the weather, the meeting of Mr C. M. Gray's friends and supporters, advertised to take place last evening, in St Luks' Schoolroom, was postponed till Thursday, November 2, at eight o'clock. Mr 0. H. Winny, Mayor of _ Now Brighton, has announced his intention of standing as a candidate for the Christchurch South electorate in-the Opposition interests. Mr George Rennie, th© Liberal candidate for. Eilesmere, addressed a meeting of electors at Pigeon Bay on Tuesday evening. Thera was a fair attendance and Mr James Piteaifchly prersided. After an attentive meeting the cainididate received a (hearty vote , of thanks. At Lyndliuirst on "Wednesday evening Mr J. Ivess addressed a meeting of Selwyn electors at the local schoolhouse. Mr Denis M'Kendry occupied the chair. The attendance was someiwhat limited, owing to the wet. night. At the close of the address the candidate was accorded -a vote of tbaaiks and confidence. Before tihe rnaetih.g separated it was decided to ask the Electoral Department to providfo a> polling booth at the Lyndhurst Post Office, many holding the opinion that it Was unfair to expect voters to travel five or six miles to. the neau'e&t polling booth to record their votes. There are between thirty and forty voters "is. the Lyndhurst district. Mil - John Studiholmo, a caiididate for the Ashburton seat, addressed the electtore in the Riverside Sdhioo'lcroom on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance, and Mr W. Anderson was voted to the chair. On. the motion of Mr David Johnston, seooinded by Mir John Doak, a vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Studholrno. Notwithstanding the fact that Mr J. R. Brunt's committee had announced in the evening papers that, owing to the inclement weather, the meeting advertised for last evening had been postponed, about one hundred electors attended at the Linwood Hall, and it was decided to go on with the meeting. Mr J. Jamieson (chairman of the School Committee) presided. Mr Brunt was well received, and at the close of his i address answered a number of questions. ' Mr Hoddinott moved, and Mr J. Cameron seconded, a vote of thanks to Mt Brunt for his address and confidence in him as a fit'and proper person to represent the district. The motion was carried unanimously. Mr T. Clarkson, a candidate for the Avon seat, delivered a political address in the New Brighton Schoolroom last evening. Owing to the unfavourable weather the attendance was small. The Mayer, Mr o.' H. Winny, presided. Mr Clarkson's- speech was listened to attentively, and at its conclusion, on the motion of Mr J. Checkley, seconded by Mr Buick, he was accorded a unanimous vote of thanks. A meeting of Mr .C. Allison's friends and supporters, held in St Saviour's Schoolroom last evening, was only moderately attended. These present formed themselves into a committee to support Mr Allison's election. Arrangements were made for future meetings and an active canvass. Numerous promises of support were reported. A meeting of Mr W. W. Collins's Central Committee was held last evening, when there was a good attendance.' - lis was d-cided that, should Parliament prorogue by the end of the week, the committee would meet, at an early date to arrange for Mr Collins's- first puhlio address. A . number of names were added to the committee, and satisfactory reports were received from the suburban portions of the electorate. A meeting of the executive of Mr T. E. Taylor's Election Committee was held last evening. It was decided to arrange for Mr Taylor to address a public meeting at the Canterbury Hall on Wednesday. In order that the electors of Gbristchurch North may secure seats, the committee arranged to distribute tickets throughout the electorate, whioh will admit the holders up to 7.45, When the general public will be admitted. Mr W. Radcliffe will _ address tho electors of the Lyttolton district at the Lyttelton Oddfellows' Hall on Monday next, at Teddington on Tuesday, and at Governor's Bav on Wednesday. Mr T. J. M'Bride will address the electors of Courtenay at Halkett at 8 p.m. on Monday. A meeting of Mr J. Hadfield's friends and supporters will be hold in the Methodist Mission Schoolroom, Durham Street South, at eight o'clock this evening. Election addresses will bo delivered by the following candidates this evenMr J. A. Efford, at the Town Hall, Belfast; Mr G. W. -"Russell;: at Upper Rieearton Schoolroom; Mr H. Shaw, at Wainui; Mr R. Moore, at Fernside; Mr 0. L. Russell, at Woolston; Mr J. Ivess, at Doric; and Mr T. Clarkson, at Phillipstown. [Per Press Association.] DTJNEDIN, October 26. _ Mr A. Marshall, Government candidate for the Taieri seat, addressed a meeting; at Mosgiel this evening. The .Volunteer Hali could scarcely ocoom-

modate the audience. He declared himself an out-and-out Government supporter. Ho favoured the leasehold, but in the case of poor land would be prepared to grant the freehold. A largo portion of bis speech was devoted to educational matt&rs. He received an attentive hearing, and at the close a vote of thanks and a motion of continued confidence in the present Government were carried.
