ENTERTAINMENTS

A successful gathering was held in th© Young Women's Christian Association’s rooms on Friday evening, when the gentlemen members entertained th© lady members of th© Christchurch Prohibition League at a social. Supper was provided by the gentlemen, and the following, contributed items to the musical programme:—Misses Bowen (2), Messrs Joli, Torrance, Instone and Pegg. Mr H. F. Toogood, candidate for Christchurch East,, gave a ehorfc address on the No-license question. The Kainpoi -Young People’s NoLicense Guild held a successful social gathering in the coffee rooms on Tuesday. Short speeches were given by Messrs Hayes, IV. Fee, J. H. Blackwell and the president. Musical items were contributed by members, and supper was provided by the ladies. On Wednesday evening the Christchurch Banjo Club, under the oonductoinship of Mr Joseph Wright, gave a concert in the Kaiapoi Oddfellows’ Hall. The annual school concert in connection with the Opawa District School, in aid of the School Picnic Fund, took place in St Mark’s Schoolroom, Opawa, on Tuesday. The large schoolroom •was far too small for th© audience that assembled. The school children contributed songs, recitations and wa-nd and dumb-bell exercises, Mr M’Donald gave a number of humorous songs, and th© following also contributed items— Misses Cocker, Gudsell, Bruce, Vincent and R. Vincent, Mrs Barker, _ and Messrs T. Baunton, C. Sendall, Wilson, R. A. Peterson, M’Laan, Barker an© W. Wortldy Turner. Th© accompanists were Misses Pavitt and Vincent and Mrs Darker. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the performer’s and all who had assisted to carry out th© programme. On Thursday evening a concert was given in th© Town Hall, Leeston under the direction of the L cost on Town Hall Company. Though th© weather was inclement, there was a fair attendance. The performers were Misses A. Chegwin, E. Field and B. Bensem, Messrs W. Densem and A. L. ■ Cropp, and H©rr Zimmormann, while Mr B. A. Horne was accompanist. Th© annual concert in connection with the Marshland Library was held on Friday. There was a good attendance, and the president, Mr R. W. Gibb, occupied the chair. A good programme .was submitted by Mrs White, Misses Adams, Doak, Noall, Pikareki and Winter, and Messrs Empson, Brown, Holly er, Close, Popplewell and Callaway. Misses Doak, Empson and Winter played the accompaniments. After the concert a dance was held, Mr C. Blank supplying th© music. A pleasant evening’s enjoyment was provided on the Hurunui-Scargill railway works on Thursday night, to celebrate th© occasion of the transfer oj Mr J. Douglas from the Public Works Department to a position under th© Railway Department. Mr and Mrs Douglas were the recipients of a purs© of sovereigns from their many wellwishers. Mr Daly made the presentation, and spoke of the esteem in which the guests of the evening were held by all who know them. Songs were contributed by Messrs Watters (2), Cassia,

Hannah, Harland, Woodward and Dean, and step dances were given by Messrs Quane and Cassia. Dancing followed, and a very enjoy able evening was brought to a close with the singing of “Aulcl Lang Syne.”
