PERSONAL.

Sir John Hall arrived in Christchurch from Hororata yesterday. Mr J. O. Wilkin arrived from Wellington by the s.s. Mararoa yesterday morning. Captain Jackson Barry was a passenger from Wellington yesterday by the s.s. Mararoa.

The Hon E. C. J. Stevens arrived by the s.s. Mararoa, from Wellington, yesterday. It is stated that Mr W. G. Murray, Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Nelson district, who has gone Home to undergo an operation, will voluntarily resign from the Public Service when ho returns to New Zealand, and will in all probability be succeeded by Mr G. J. Roberts, Commissioner for Westland. . The Rev H. W. Williams, of Gisborne, who is preparing a new edition of the Polynesian Dictionary, intends to make arrangements, during a visit to South Africa, for the use in the new work of documents deposited in the Public Library at Cape Town by the late Sir George Grey. Mr Williams will bear letters of introduction to the Premier of Cape Colony, given him by Mr Sedd°Mr F. W. Mansfield is in Christchurch. . . Major Mackenzie, Mr J. A. A. Riedle (Dunedin), Mr and Mrs D. D. Macfarlane (Lyndon), and Mr Scnvner are in Christchurch. Mr Richardson, who has been in Christchurch for a short time, returned to Wellington last evening. Mr Hurst was a passenger to Wellington .last evening. Mr Justice Chapman, the Rev H. Braddock, and Mr Gilbert Anderson left for Wellington by the s.s. Mararoa yesterday evening. Mr C. A. C. Hardy, M.H.R., was in Christchurch yesterday. _ _ The following have been visitors to the Spa, Hanmer, during the week:— Mr and Mrs S. E. Whitcombe (Christchurch), Mr A. Scriven (London), Mr and Mrs G. ,Grigg (Dunedin), Mrs A. Young (Christchurch), Mr J. H. Parker (Christchurch), Mr W. Logan (Christchurch), Mrs Morton (Owaka), Mr T. Ballinger (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs J. Thompson (Christchurch). Mr AY. Morris (Napier), Mrs Diamond (Rangiora), Mr A. D. Sutherland (Invercargill), Sir H. A. Jones (Kaitangat-a).
