LABOUR ON HOLIDAYS.

THE RATE FOR LABOUR DAY. [Per Pbess Association.] WANGANUI, -October 20. The local Inspector of Factories intends enforcing the award with respect to overtime rates on holidays,. as interpreted by Mr Justice -Chapman. This means that all those who were working on. Labour Day, and are included! in the industrial awards, will reesive time and a half in additionto their ordinary pay. Thus, those who ordinarily receive Is per hour will have to be paid "at the rate of 2s 6d per hour. In answer, to inquiries, the head of the Labour Department has stated that the award made in the case of the drivers in Wellington has a colonial application, in so far as itapplies to all factories ; hence, tho action of the local inspector. This is, apparently, the outcome of an article in the Wanganui " Chronicle," denouncing the injustice of the Court's " double-time " interpretation.
