OBITUARY.

I CAPTAIN WHITWELL. [Per Press Association.] NELSON, October 20. Captain. Whitwell, th« second senior steamer master in the colony, who was in j command of the Sandfly in the Taranaki war, and of tie steamers Lyttelton, Wal- j laby and Kennedy in the busy tinie> of the j AA'eat Coast rush, died suddenly in his sleep at his son's residence, Wakapuaka, last night, aged seventy-four, from hesrt failure. He was well known throughout shipping and bowling circles in th« colony, and till recently daily rode intotown on a bicycle, doing sixteen miles regularly. Ho leaves six sons and three . daughters. One son, Mr Watson Whitwell, is engineer of the State mine at Seddonville. MR J. M. HEYWOOD. The death is announced of Mr J. MHeywood, a very old resident of this city, and head of tlie firm of J. M. Heywood and Co., who passed away at Ids residence ; yesterday morning. He founded the ex- : tensive business carried on, by tk-a firm '• as early as June, 1851, in Lyttelton. He : was appointed agent in Lyttelton for thb Northern Assurance Company in 1859, and : was the oldest insurance representative in Canterbury. In 1861 he was appointed , agent for "the. New Zealand! Insurance. Com- j pany, and continued to represent tbat com- ; pany until it established a branch office in Christchurch. Since 1872 the firm has held the appointment of chief agents and attorneys in Canterbury for the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society, and it also j represents several large firms in the United Kingdom and the United States. In 1860, Mr Heywood ereeetd a wharf on FerryRoad, and ran the ateamei' Planet and j other email craft for the conveyance of i goods and merchandise between Lyttelton ■ and Christchurch. After the opening of i the Lyttelton—Christchurch Railway this property was rendered useless, and in 1879 the firm obtained the railway cartage* contract for the delivery of goods in Christchurch and the suburbs, which it carried out successfully for about seventeen years, j As Customhouse agents, also, the' firm is : widely known throughout Canterbury. Mr Heywood, who made a. very large number of friends during his long residence in this district, carried out. many good works in an unostentatious manner, an;* his death ia regretted in all parts of the province.. H« leaves four daughters, two married and two single, and two sons, both married. The funeral will leave Mr Heywood's late residence, Lincoln Road, at 2.30 p.m. to-moirowj, for the Avocside churchyard. '
