THE VANCOUVER SERVICE.
EXTENSION OF THE PRESENT CONTRACT. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. MELBOURNE, May 8. Sir E. Barton states that a contract has practically been concluded with the Union Steamship Company extending the Vancouver service for two years at a , slightly increased ‘ subsidy. Sir E. Barton stipulates that one of the steamers shall be brought up to the efficiency of the other two. [From Our Correspondent.] DUNEDIN, May 8. The allusion by Sir Edmund Barton in the cable regarding the Vancouver service, to a stipulation, evidently refers to the s.s. Miowera, which lias hitherto been somewhat behind the other two boats in general efficiency. Sha will, on the first opportunity. be thoroughly overhauled and put, in order. The Moana and Aorangi have of late been receiving most extensive patronage, and “full ship" has been common. There is, I understand, to be no alteration in the service.
