THE VOLUNTEER'S.

X BATTERY. On Wednesday night the members, of tlia X Battery, Lyiteitor.,' entertained Lieutenant Neville, one ( of their officers, on the occasion- of his approaching marriage. A large number of members of the company; and several visitors assembled in the Battery orderly-room after parade. Captain J.. T. Brice presided, and among the visitors were the Mayor of Lyttelion, Mr J. Grubb, _ Captain Curtis, of No. 5 Company Garrison ' Artillery (Lyttelton Navab) and Lieutenant Wales, 'of the Lyttelton Garrison Artillery Cadets. After the health o: the King,and the Royal family had been drunk, that of Lieutenant Neville was proposed by-Cap-tain Brice, who presented Mr Neville with, a set of silver-mounted carvers as a wedding gift from the company. He expressed high appreciation of Mr Neville's conduct ; and ability as an officer, and wished hims happiness and prosperity in the futureCaptain Curtis also complimented and congratulated Lieutenant Neville, and" the; toast was enthusiastically drunk. Lieuten-,'. ant Neville replied, heartily thanking,.the members of the company for their kindness and, good wishes. Other toasts honoured! were:—"The Lyttelton Navals," proposed; by Lieutenant Neville, and responded toj'by.'-;. Captain- Curtis ; li The Mayor," proposed bv Lieutenant Wardle, and acknowledged by Mr Grubb; ",The Cadets," proposed by, Sergeant-Major Rattray, and replied to;! by Lieutenant Wales ; " The N Battery," pro-r posed by Captain Curtis, and responded to ' by Captain Brice; and "The Press." ;''During the evening some good songs, were sungi by Gunners Carson, Lanyon. Mahar, .Rowley. Cole, Gil more and Seed, and Secondclass Petty, Officer Carson. ?.-■■, : ■

-At a meeting of the Imperial Rinesvon; Wednesday evening, Colour - Sergeant) Butcher was unanimously elected a lieutenant of the corps, and ex-Lieu tenant Hplde'rness and ex-Sergeants Cordery, Cowjwr-and Knight were elected life-members. ;,:;: Major-General Babington will inspect'ths three Ashburton Volunteer corps on*June 2. , ■ ;■ ■■.;. .:";■' •■
