GOOD FRIDAY. TO THE EDITOR. Sir,, —I write 'to correct a- statement of ■our correspondent "Churchman." He says: "I think-1 am right in saying that sports gathering's on Good Friday are unknown "in England, where the day is observed with the sume -sanctity as the Sabbath." Out of the 36 clubs'in the-English Football Lea-2-ue. 28 have fixture* for Good Friday. Ths" majority of the 32 clubs in both dirsions of tlh.e Northern Rugby Union some dozen of the best known English Kugbv Union dubs, and tie four principal Welsh, elubs are all engaged on Good Friday. In fact, next Good Friday some two hundred thousand people will attend foo'ti,„m «, a ,j C h,es. Add to this, that- in my own » town it is not- the custom to close the factories on Good Friday' if there is sufficient work to keep them going, and you will see how misleading " Churchman's" statement is. Ido not wish to take sides on this question, but simply to correct a> wrong impression.—l am, etc., ° ■ LESTKIAN. HOTEL IMPROVEMENTS. In accordance with the ma.nda.te of the Licensing Committee which bade certain propertv-holders " pull down their barus and build larger," quile a. number of new howl premises are rapidly approaching a sightly completion. One of the first- to be opened to tlhe public is the Royal Hotel, on Oxford Terrace, the old wooden structure havinggiven : pla.ce to a handsome building in brick and .ytone. Another wing of the hotel is yet to be built., but tie completed portion, winch comprises the principal part of the living accommodation, has now been opened. The old building was in a sense a Christchurch la.tidnTO.rk, but wha ; t the new one lack's in afi.wcia.tion it makes up in comfort and ornament. The hall and dining-roomi are specially sightly features of the establishment, the furnishing and decoraiting of which are upon a- most lavish scale. Messrs. W. -Strange and Co. are responsible for this portion of itihe work, which has been carried out in a, most thorough and elaborate man--1 ner. *■ CHEAP CYCLE REQUISITES. The Massey-Harris Bicycle Depot, of 148, Cashel Street, are now selling all cycle sundries at wholesale prices. Belis from 6d, lamps from 2s, tyres from Bs, tubes 4s, Brooks' 810 saddles 10s 9d, Oceanic covers 12s 6c>, All other goods equally as cheap. Z 3048 ,
