CHEVIOT RAILWAY.
COUNTER PETITIONS. [From Our Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, August 19. This afternoon Mr Meredith presented to the Minister for Public Works a petition signed by one hundred and thirty Cheviot settlers praying for a deviation in the surveyed line or railway towards the township of McKenzie. He presented at tike same time a counter petition by one hundred and seven settlers praying that no deviation shall be made. The Minister, on the recommendation of the member for Ashley, "undertook to have a report made by a competent engineer, and on that report to come to a decision on the merits of the question.
