RAILWAY EXTENSION.
A DEPUTATION TO MINISTERS, , [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 30. A deputation representing the Marlborough Railway and Land League waited upon Mr Seddou-, Sir Joseph Ward, and Messrs Hall-Jones and T. Y. Duncan to-riight, to urge the prosecution of the Blenheim-W aipara line, and -the xxecessity for closer settlement of the land. It was recognised that' the line could not be pushed on while -the Flaxbpurne Estate was locked up, and the deputation asked that the Government should take prompt steps to acquire the estate, and so facilitate the construction- of the Tine. Mr Seddon, in replying, said that- an answer to the deputation- could not be given off hand. To take possession of such a large estate as Flaxbourne ; opened up a large question of finance. They must consider what was to he the limit of xhe expenditure of borrowed money. For public works already a sum of a million and: a half was required, for line improvements half a million, and a like amount for land purchases. With that expenditure in view, it was just about -time'that the position- was fairly faced. To announce a borrowing policy at the present time would be prejudicial to the colony’s finance.
