CHARGE OF FALSE PRETENCES.
AN AUSTRALIAN WIDOW DEFRAUDED. United Press Association—By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, July 29. Two men, named George Thompson, alias Stephen, claiming to be a Bendigo miner, and Charles MacNally, were charged at Bow Street- with defrauding a widow named Annie Renwick, of Bourke Street, Melbourne. Mrs. Renwick, who is now on a voyage to Melbourne, has promised the Police that she will return. She alleges -that the accused took her and hei daughter to Paris, and promised marriage. They then, under various pretexts, obtained £BOO from her, and no marriage resulted. The accused have 'been remanded. MELBOURNE, July 30. The men Thompson and MaoNally, who have been arrested in London, are believed to be identical with well-known spielers. The former has been frequently convicted, and the latter absconded from bail. The lady’s identity has not been established.
