ANOTHER REMAND

Walter Brewer w.as brought tip again at the 'Magistrate's Court on. Saturday morning, on the charge of having ■on or about June 14 used certain instruments on 'Bertha, Margaret Light with intern* to.procure miscarriage.

Mr Oassid'y appeared! for the accused. Sub-Inspector Black applied for a further remand until Tuesday next, when Dr Crooke thought that Miss Lighb would he able to appear. She was. believed to be quite out of danger now. Mr Cassidy raised no objection to the remand, whioh Mr Bishop, S.M., granted. Mr Cassidy then applied for bail, and asked that it should be made as small as possible, or else the accused would have great difficulty in finding it. It was -very difficult to prepare the defence when the accused could only be seen at Lyttelton. The Magistrate said he did mot wish) to make the bail prohibitive, but the charge was such a serious one that it must be substantial. In such a case he could not take into consideration the circumstances of the accused Bail would be allowed in Brewer's own surety of £IOO, and two sureties of. £IOO each.

Nellie Maud Brewer, for whom Mr Joynt appeared, was then charged with the same offence.

Mr Joynt appeared for the accused, and raised no objection to the remand until Tuesday. He also applied for small bail, But Mr Bishop fixed it, in the same amount as. in the other case.
