A SKATING CARNIVAL.

■*— — A PICTURESQUE SPECTACLE AT ASHBURTON. [From Our Correspondent.] ASHBURTON, July 10. An ice carnival,' arranged in Asliburton, took place last night, .and was both a pretty and a unique sight. Over two thousand . persons assembled on the banks of the Domain pond. • At eight o'clock a. huge bonfire and various coloured fairy lamps and acetylene lights were lit, and an overture was played by an orchestra provided by the local Skating Club, The committee then assembled on the ics and endeavoured to carry out a programme of sports • arranged by Messrs L. J. Hobbs and A. Garner, but the public was enjoying itself in its own way and refused to leave the ice. Fully 400 people were skating at one time, and two or three persons went through' the ice, greatly to the amusement, of the. onlooker?. _ The ice has been broken up in all directions, and it is questionable whether there will be any more good skating this-sea-sen., A collection, taken up to provide comforts for the inmates of the local hospital realised £8 2s 6d. The principal collectors were Mesdafnes Ten-naiit and Allington and Misses Maoandrew, Gresson,' Harrison, Seaiey, F. Bell and Shury. Great credit is due to the honorary secretary, Mr H. A. M'Kay, for the work he did in connection with the fete.
