GAELIC WELCOME.

< ..-I. TO THE EDITOR. Sir,-—At the time of the celebration of the provincial Jubilee, the Premier was reported to have used, in addressing the In-

vercargill pipers, the words, “cead mile failthe.” In ‘ Gaelic “ cead ” .signifies permission and “millo” destruction, and the third word was either manufactured by your correspondent or belongs to some unknown tongue. He probably meant to say “ ceud mile failte (a hundred thousand welcomes). Mr O’Connor is in error regarding the first of the three words with which he bead's his letter in Saturday’s “Times.” Vcre Foster is but a lame authority on orthography, whatever may he thought of him as a puff advertiser. Mr O’Connor ought’ rather to have consulted a standard dictionary, and he would have found his heading should have been “ cqud mile A CELT.
