THE VOLUNTEERS.

At the ordinary parade of t3ae Kaiapoi Volunteers there was an attendance of fiftyfour. The men were served with their new kharki uniforms and leggings. The North Canterbury Mounted Rifles paraded for drill at Tuahiwi on Wednesday evening. The Captain gave instruction in cloak rolling, and the correct mounted salute, and next Wednesday evening a competition in cloak-rolling will be held. This company will be well represented at the camp, as all the men are taking interest in the work. Next Wednesday evening all the kits will be handed in, and the horse covers on Thursday morning, before ten o’clock. The company will assemble at Kaiapoi on Thursday, a t 1.30 p.m., and march under their division leaders to the Addington Show Groundis. The annual ball has been fixed for July 5, ait Kaiapoi, and a large committee has been formed. The following promotions have been made in the Rangiora Rifle Company Corporals de Troy and August to be Sergeant?, Lance-Corporal M’Millan, Privates Milne, Bunting, and Pethig to be corporals, Privates Prestney, Buxton and Buss to be lance-coaporals. . ' ' ' The Geraldine division of the Geraldine Mounted Rifle Corps held a fancy-dress ball, on Thursday night, at the Geraldine Volunteer Hall, which was well filled with couples. The ball wots very prettily decorated, and an excellent supper was provided by the ladies. Messrs Murray and Heap supplied the music, and Sergeant-Major Bisfett acted as M.C. The fancy dresses worn by the ladies wera very handsome, and on the whole the function was most enjoyable. A mounted parade of the North Oanterburv Mounted Rifles was hold Mr Horne’s homestead on Saturday last. There was a large muster, aud two hours .good work was put in. Captain Cossgrove presented 'the marksman’s badges to each 1 of the following :—Corporal Tyler, a rifle and three stars; to Sergeant-Major Fantham, Bugler Cossgrove, Troopers Heney, Mellon, Russell, Rowe,, Whit/ton and Young, a rifle and two stars. Nine marksmen the first year is a good record for the N.O.M.R. The following promotions were also made: ; —Corporals Tyler and Jeffries to be sergeants ; Troopers Rowe and Young to be corporals, and Troopers Seed! and 6. Kelly to he lance-corporals. Final instructions were given as to the camp, and a cloakrolling competition will be held on Wednesday evenimt, in the Drill HalL
