. [From Our Correspondent.] DUNEDIN, Feb. 19. Recognising that the members of the Fire Brigade are underpaid the General Committee will recommend to the City Council to-morrow night the following increases in the wages paid:'—Captain Mitchell, from £2OO to £225 per annum; senior foreman from £2O to £3O; second foreman from £2O to £26; fifteen firemen £l6 to £2O each. In connection with the installation of the electric tram system it is proposed to provide for an extension to Tahuna Park. The Balclulha Borough Council has decided to accept an offer from the Patent ua Gas Company to light the; streets with water gas. The works are to be commenced within a month, and completed within three months. The “ Star ” says that a spieler who recently travelled: from Lyttelton to Dunedin in one of the Union Company’s intercolonial liners was successful an relieving a saloon passenger of nearly £4O before getting away from the vessel. The spieler was induced to hand back bis gains under a threat of exposure, and the affair was eventually hushed up owing to the position of one of the principals in the affair.
